Join Producer and Director Hannah Yohannes as she discusses how diversity, equity and representation should play an important role both in front of and behind the camera, and how we can help shape a more diverse and equitable screen-based media landscape in Canada. Drawing from her vast experience in the Canadian film and television industry, she will also discuss why producers should commit to championing diversity through tangible and meaningful hiring, casting, consulting and story editing.
Biography
Hannah Yohannes is a film director and screenwriter who is well known for her critically-acclaimed short film, Home Away, which has been featured on Issa Rae’s Short Film Sunday Series and won the Shaw Media Fearless Female Directors Award. Her work has been showcased in numerous film festivals worldwide such as the San Diego Black Film Festival, Sarasota Film Festival and Reelworld Film Festival. Hannah has studied scriptwriting at Michigan State University and has been nominated as one of 100 Accomplished Black Canadian Women by the Hon. Jean Augustine for her experience in developing film work, advocacy and arts programming.
She recently worked on Big Brother Canada’s historic 9th season and currently oversees festival and year-round programming for the Reelworld Film Festival and Reelworld Screen Institute.
