Panelists: Karen Cliche, Angie Mills, Amica Hewitt
Karen Cliche
Karen Cliche has been an actress for 25 years, starring in over 50 films and TV shows, producing and hosting her own cooking show in French, and lending her voice to various brands, audiobooks and media campaigns for 10 years. Her most recent film is Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving, starring Patrick Dempsey, in theatres November 17, 2023. Karen was born in Quebec to military family and moved every few years around the world including Virginia and Germany. She also travelled extensively as a model before landing lead roles in TV and film projects in Europe, Australia, Canada and Hong Kong. She currently resides in Ottawa with her 14 year old daughter and 2 cats.
Angie Mills
I grew up in a cinephile family, and knew I’d have a happy life if I could make a living making movies. After a prolific video production time in high school, I headed to Toronto to attend Ryerson University’s Radio and Television program in 1995.
Then “life happened” and I gained some off set experience in the retail and service industries before finding my way back to film through special effects makeup. I had a successful makeup career for 16 years in Toronto and Ottawa, then began Script Supervising. That’s when I realized my burning desire to be actively involved with each shot of the process… and am back on track to Direct.
I love stories about unexpected characteristics and situations, specifically from a Women’s perspective. Music is also very integral in my storytelling.
Mostly I like to have fun with other artistic “misfits” and create something interesting in the process!
Amica Hewitt
Amica Hewitt is a multi-talented and curious creator, seamlessly balancing her passion for storytelling with her life as a single mother. She has worked as a scriptwriter, researcher and recipe developer, story editor, sous chef, culinary coordinator, and food stylist for television cooking shows and film. Her artistic vision and unique problem-solving skills have also led her to roles as set decorator, props buyer, and shop lead.
In 2021, Amica was asked (told) to step in front of the camera as an actor, starring in Meghan's Day and has been deeply encouraged by further offers and roles in short-films, including Looking Inside Out, and Mötherhead. She rarely identifies as an actor but her friends' do - Amica credits much of her success in film and tv to her best friend and fellow creative collaborator, writer and director, Angie Mills. Together, they navigate the challenges of motherhood and filmmaking, sharing moments of inspiration over cans of lukewarm club soda on set...it's one of the only ways they can find time together.
In 2023, Amica returned to her small hometown of Perth, Ontario, with her son. She continues to pursue writing and acting projects. She is currently developing a production series with two co-creators, while bringing home the bacon in social services and community development.
MAISSA HOURI
Maissa (she/her) is an Arab-Canadian award-winning independent filmmaker and actor. Due to misrepresentation of Arabs and Muslims on TV and in film, Maissa started creating her own work in order to properly represent her culture. Currently she is working on a new series based on Arab-Canadians, producing short films for emerging BIPOC directors and a new Instagram Live segment titled Moms After Dark, where she interviews mothers working in the creative industries.
