Panel: Video as Activism
co-presented by Digital Arts Resource Centre (DARC) formerly SAW Video
**NEW TIME** Dec. 11, 2020 @ 1:30 PM • ZOOM • 90 mins
This panel brings together three media artists whose use of video as an activist tool varies greatly. Moderated by Annette Hegel, this will be a nuanced conversation about how the medium is used in different forms and through varying means of distribution, as well as how video can 'activate' discussion and discourse, and mobilize action.
Panelists
Gabriela Warrior Renaud
Gabriela Warrior Renaud, lovingly known as Gaby, is a documentary filmmaker and strong advocate for social and climate justice. She strongly believes in the power of thoughtful and critical storytelling in our collective fight for justice. As a queer, mixed woman of colour, Gabriela understands the importance of intersectional representation and strives to hold these spaces in her work. She is fascinated by our connection to history, each other and the earth and seeks to create work that humanizes the difficult and overlooked. She approaches each project with tenderness and care and keeps her heart open to learning.
Her current documentary project Hyphen was born out her own desire to feel whole within a fragmented identity. Building a narrative around mixed race experiences, Gabriela was able to find the grounding she was seeking, and is humbly reclaiming her South Indian heritage.
Bianca Rogers
Bianca’s work synthesizes filmmaking and activism. She has produced documentaries and videos for political campaigns, grassroots activist organizations, museums, universities, and non-profit organizations. She has directed and produced two documentaries on the refugee crisis in Europe, “Studio Series: Lesvos”, and “View(points) 360”. She currently works at The New School as a digital content producer.
Bianca earned her Master’s Degree in International Affairs, with a concentration in Media and Culture, at The New School where she studied media ethics and media representation. She believes in the power of storytelling to create a more inclusive and just world.
Annette hegel, Moderator
Annette Hegel is a multi-media artist who has exhibited her work in Canada and in Europe. Working out of her studio in downtown Ottawa, she is a founding member of Slipstream Collective, and nurtures collaborations with many artist activists in many places. Annette's multi-disciplinary work is deeply rooted in social-critical art culture. Political themes are at its centre, addressing local as well as meta-national conditions. Her work raises issues within a civil society to challenge the “isms” and all their inhumane expressions.
She lives and works in Ottawa on the traditional unceded and unsurrendered territory of the Anishinābe Aki.
